Open the washing machine when it is empty and turned off, and attempt to turn the drum using your hand. If you meet resistance, the drive belt is still working. If there is little resistance, the drive belt may be broke or have slipped off.

Unplug the washing machine and move it away from the wall so you can easily access the back panel. Use a screwdriver to remove the six to 10 screws that typically hold the back panel in place. Lift the panel off so you can get a clear view inside the washing machine.

Find the drive belt and check for cracks. If it's broken, purchase a new drive belt and replace it. If the drive belt simply slipped off, there may be a larger problem. Place it back on and reassemble the machine. If the washing machine continues to function normally, this is all you need to do. If the drive belt slips off again, or the drive belt was not the problem, proceed to Step 4.

Check that the drive belt is tight. A loose drive belt is useless and should be replaced. When you pull on it, it should snap back into place with a soft sound, much like plucking the string on a musical instrument.

Check that you haven't overloaded the washing machine. If the machine will turn but not quickly, you may need to redistribute the items to balance it out. If there is still a problem, you will need to call a repairman. Most likely a small piece inside the machine has broken and will need a professional to find and fix it.
