How to Decorate Rock Fireplaces
Rock or stone fireplaces are visually stunning. They are the focal point of any room and dominate the style of the room. For that reason, any decorations chosen for a stone fireplace need to have their own impact. Small objects will be lost on a rock fireplace mantel, and shiny gold or metal objects will contrast in a bad way with the rustic look of the rock. Instead, choose large items made from natural materials. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Clean the stone of any soot or dirt. Use a cleaner formulated to clean fireplaces, warm water and a stiff brush. A dirty fireplace exterior will diminish the impact of the decorations.
-
2
Decorate the mantel. Choose large items that will show up easily against the rocks. Avoid anything gray, as it will just blend in with the stone, and don't cram a lot of miscellaneous items together on the mantel. Select related items. A black-framed photo, for example, looks stunning and elegant against gray rock, as does a black wooden candlestick or a mantel clock.

Hang something above the mantel, or the fireplace if you don't have a mantel. A large, rustic wreath, such as a grapevine or evergreen wreath, will complement the rock nicely. Avoid using a wreath that is overly fussy, such as one with a lot of colorful silk flowers and lace, as this will not go well with the look of the stone.

Place a basket of kindling on the hearth, along with some clean fireplace tools. Or, place something seasonal on the hearth, such as a wrought-iron advent candle holder.

Tips & Warnings
Decorate your mantel to reflect the seasons, but keep to the rustic theme of the rock fireplace. White lights and evergreen or cranberry garlands, for example, would look wonderful on a rock fireplace mantel. Bright gold, sparkling garland, however, would not look as good.
