How to Calculate BMI BSA
BMI and BSA are acronyms for health-related formulas that factor in the height and weight of the individual who is being measured. BMI stands for Body Mass Index and involves a calculation of the individual's weight divided by height. BSA is Body Surface Area and is found through a series of multiplications of weight and height.
Instructions
-
Taking Measurements
-
1
Weigh the individual and record the information. The less clothing on the person being weighed, the more accurate the numbers will be.
-
2
Instruct the person to remove his shoes and socks, and measure his height with the measuring tape.
-
-
3
Multiply the person's weight by .4535 if you measured in pounds to convert it to kilograms.
-
4
Multiply the height by 2.54 if you measured in inches to convert to centimeters.
Calculating BSA
-
5
Find the result of the measured weight in kilograms taken to the .425 power. Most scientific calculators will accomplish this by entering the weight, pressing the "X^y" button and putting .425 inside the parenthesis after the "^" character.
-
6
Find the result of the measured height in centimeters taken to the .725 power by entering the height, pressing the X^y button and putting .725 inside the parenthesis after the ^ character.
-
7
Multiply the results of steps 1 and 2.
-
8
Multiply the result of Step 3 by 0.007184.
Calculating BMI
-
9
Divide the individual's height by 100.
-
10
Square the number found in Step 1.
-
11
Divide the individual's weight by the number found in Step 2.
