There are many different types of liquid fertilizer products designed to stimulate growth in plants and gardens. One type of liquid fertilizer, often referred to as fish emulsion, contains discarded fish parts as a base and is an effective fertilizer supplement. Many gardeners and landscapers particularly like the ease of application, low cost and non-chemical manufacturing process of liquid fish fertilizer.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide on a method to apply the liquid fish fertilizer. There are methods to choose from including: a hand-held spray bottle, industrial-sized pump sprayer and a smaller garden hose bottle attachment. Any of these methods works well.

  2. Step 2

Mix the fish fertilizer with water according to the directions on the package. Because liquid fish fertilizer comes in different concentration levels, it's important to mix it with the appropriate ratio of water recommended by the manufacturer.

  3. Step 3

Apply the liquid fertilizer early in the morning or late at night to allow the plant to absorb the liquid. Do not apply it the middle of the day as most of the liquid will evaporate because of the heat of the sun.

  4. Step 4

Apply the fertilizer directly to the soil at the base of the plant. Water until the ground is thoroughly soaked. Then spray the fertilizer onto the stem and leaves of the plant.

Tips & Warnings
  • Apply fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season each spring, or any time that a new plant is placed into the ground.
  • Follow the initial spring fertilizing with additional applications every 2 weeks throughout the spring and summer months.
