How to Collect Clover Seed

There are numerous advantages to planting and growing clover in your yard or on your lawn. Clover has extremely long roots, which makes it a durable plant. The roots allow it to find water deep underground, so it is drought resistant. It also helps to control weeds, as it absorbs and maintains all nutrients from the soil. Collecting seeds from clover already growing on your property can help you save money while keeping a beautiful-looking lawn. When growing clover you can't be sure you'll find yourself a four leaf clover for good luck, but you can guarantee a beautiful and low-maintenance yard or lawn. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Observe the growth of your clover as it progresses throughout the season. As soon as the flowers begin to fade for the season, the seeds will be visible; you want to spot the seeds as soon as possible to guarantee that you collect them at the right time.

    • 2

Pick the clover seeds as they begin to look brown or dry on the stem. Do not pick them while they are still green, because these seeds are not ripe and will not produce good plants.

    • 3

Pinch the stem of the clover between your thumb and index finger and gently pull the seeds off of the stem. Store them in a dry container until you are ready to replant them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to collect the seeds at the correct time, as they are starting to look dry on the stem. Collecting too early will result in a seed that will not produce a plant because it is not fully ripened; waiting too long will cause the seeds to fall off of the clover plant and dry out.
