How to Figure Size for an Under House Central Air Unit
Figuring the size for a central air unit isn't difficult. You will, however, need to ask the basics: How large is your home and what is the number of windows? Is there much shade on the windows, and how much insulation is in the ceiling and walls? Also find out if air leaks in from the outside. Make sure you buy the correct size of air conditioner. Be aware that a large air conditioner won't necessarily give you the best cooling. Purchasing an oversized air conditioner hurts you by being more expensive than a smaller model, and larger models also have their efficiency reduced because of more sporadic on and off cycles.

Find out if your windows are made of one sheet of glass (single pane) or two sheets of glass (double pane) before beginning the project. Also determine what type of condition the windows are in, then take measurements of the windows.

Next, adequately determine how much shading the windows have. This will help you find out if you need a large central air unit or a smaller one. Closed curtains, trees and hanging vegetation that prevents the sun from reaching the window will help keep your home cool.

Your house size will help you determine the size of your needed air unit. Find out the age of your home, too. Next, determine the amount of insulation you have throughout the walls of your home. Add insulation to your home if you have little or none. It'll bring down the cost of your energy bill and save you money since you'll need a smaller cooling unit. Also find out if there are air leaks in your home. Before purchasing a unit, make sure that you seal all air leaks.

Check to see where the ducts in your home are primarily located. Ductwork is a major dynamic in figuring out the size needed for your central air unit. Determine if the ducts are insulated. If leaks are present in the ducts, seal them before purchasing the air unit. You'll need a smaller unit if you first seal the leaks.
