Instructions

  1. Decorating a frame with dried flowers

    • 1

Prepare your frame. Remove glass and backing from the frame so that glue does not get onto the glass or other parts of the picture frame. Wipe any dust off of frame, and if unpainted, paint a solid color that coordinates with your dried flowers. Use acrylic paints and allow to dry thoroughly before preceding.

    • 2

Heat your glue gun. Keep extra glue sticks on hand in the event that your glue gun runs low. Lay your frame flat on newspaper, and allow your hot glue gun to heat sufficiently before beginning your project. Use clear hot glue sticks so that glue is not visible behind the flowers.

    • 3

Prepare dried flowers. Trim the stems from dried flower buds and blooms to provide a flat surface to adhere against the frame. Trim all the flowers you will need to complete the project so that you can complete the project efficiently. Use small sharp scissors to trim off stems and discard.

    • 4

Apply a thin line of glue to the inner corner of the frame and along the bottom edge. Gently place dried flower buds onto the glue strip and press down lightly. Continue along the edge placing flowers closely together. When done, apply another line of glue and continue going around the frame row by row until covered.

    • 5

Spray the completed picture frame with clear lacquer or a high-gloss varnish to protect the dried flowers. Be sure to spray the frames in a well-ventilated area.

    • 6

Reassemble the picture frame by inserting glass and backboards. Handle the frame carefully when placing or hanging, as the dried flowers will remain somewhat fragile and delicate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use dried flower blooms in one color to create a rich look.

  • Create a stockpile of dried flowers by drying floral arrangements you receive as gifts as well as wild flowers you find locally.

  • Dry flowers in books or using a microwave and store in sealed containers.

  • Avoid using dried flowers with stems and leaves as glue may show behind thin stems and will distract from the beauty of your creation.
