How to Clean a Cast Iron Kettle
Cast iron is a classic when it comes to cooking. Cast iron cookware was used exclusively in the kitchen at one time and has always been a mainstay of outdoor cooking. Because high heat does not affect the metal, cast iron kettles are often seen in use at the campfire. Cast iron is enjoying a resurgence in popularity because you can cook with cast iron on the top of the stove and also in the oven. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Soft cloth or paper towels
- Vegetable oil or Crisco
- Hot water
- Nylon sponge or plastic spatula

Wipe the inside of the kettle with a soft cloth or paper towel after you finish cooking but while the kettle is still warm. If you used a lid with your kettle wipe it off as well.

Pour very hot water into the kettle to remove any particles that may be stuck on the kettle.

Rub the areas where food is stuck on with a plastic spatula or nylon sponge.

Repeat Step 1.

Apply a thin layer of vegetable oil or Crisco to the kettle and lid with a soft cloth or paper towel until both are covered. This process is called seasoning.

Tips & Warnings
When storing the kettle and lid leave the lid askew or place some paper towels inside. This helps keep moisture from building up inside and causing rust.
Never put cold water into a hot kettle or lid or put the hot kettle or lid in cold water. This can cause the cast iron to shatter.
Never use soap on seasoned cast iron.
