How to Promote Nursing As a Career to Children
Nurses serve many important functions in the health care field. Nurses help to care for patients in the recovery from illness and help educate them about medical procedures. A career as a nurse can be a satisfying choice that allows the employee to combine the need to earn a living with the desire to be involved in the helping professions. In order to help find qualified candidates for this vitally important profession, it is important to promote nursing to students early in life. Children who want to become nurses should ideally begin preparing for the profession early.

1
Teach students about nursing. Work with students to educate them about the duties of a nurse. Elementary school children often interact with nurses as they grow up. A nurse may administer medications when they are sick with a mild cold, check for certain medical conditions and give them lifesaving immunizations. Remind students they could one day become a nurse.

2
Help students learn science and math. In order to become a nurse, you must take classes in math and the sciences. Nurses must understand chemistry and biology. Give students a thorough grounding in the basics of math and science. Students may discover they like math and science, and want to work in fields where they are used.

Take students on a field trip to see nurses in action. Students may see a school nurse working in their classroom. Teach students that nurses work in a wide variety of fields. Bring them to visit a nurse in a cardiac-care unit or one who cares for mothers and babies in a labor-and-delivery unit of a hospital.

Ask a nurse to visit the class. Many elementary schools hold career days where students can learn about different professions. Ask a registered nurse to come to class and talk to students about her job. She may talk to students about her education, duties and even the financial rewards of the nursing profession. A nurse may also help emphasize that the career has many other advantages, including flexible hours, portability and ease of entrance.

Bring students to visit a pediatrics unit. Some nurses choose to work with children who are facing illnesses. Other children can find it easier to relate to patients who are their own age. Ask a pediatrics nurse to show the students how she helps a sick child recover. A nurse can talk about how she makes the child feel better by using medication as well as how she helps him make the right food choices.
