Draw your design on graph paper using a pencil. Start with a simple design first, and try to keep the lines of your design within the squares of the graph paper.

Color in the squares according to your design; later when you create your rug you will match the yarn to the colors on the paper. Each square on the graph paper can match up with a hole in your latch hook mat, so fill in each square individually.

Transfer your design to the latch hook mat. Place your paper design under the mat and trace the pattern onto the mat with permanent markers. You can use a black marker for the main design, or use colored markers for the whole pattern.
