Pet salamanders are some of the easiest pets to take care of, and are great starter pets for children. One of the first things you have to think about when buying a pet salamander is where you're going to place them in your house and creating a safe habitat for the to live in.

Since salamanders are amphibians, they like to have a moist and damp environment, with both land and water. Depending on what kind of salamander you have, it might have a preference towards either land or water rather than both. Most salamanders start to adapt to land when they reach adulthood, but others like to stay in water while only occasionally venturing to land. Make sure to research on your pet salamander's likes and dislikes when you choose the environment.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic box or clear glass tank
  • Clean water
  • Water filter
  • Gravel
  1. Step 1

You can place your salamander's new habitat in a large opaque plastic box, or in a clear glass tank. Most people choose to use tanks that are around five to ten gallons worth, but if you'd only like to have one salamander, then a plastic box is acceptable as well. Just make sure that there is adequate space for it to roam around and swim as well.

  2. Step 2

Start by filling the container with two to three inches of clean water, and then make around one fourth of the tank a terrestrial area. You should add different plants as well to the land, depending on what kind of salamander you're getting.

  3. Step 3

The whole area around the container should always be clean, so install a filter into the tank or container.

  4. Step 4

You will need to add gravel to the bottom of the water so that your salamander doesn't get sucked in with the current.

  5. Step 5

All of the above steps should create a good salamander habitat for your pet, and later on maybe you can add another salamander to your home so that your little pet salamander has friends.

Tips & Warnings
