Things You'll Need:
- Fabric scraps
- Needle and thread
- Ribbon or cord for hanger
- cotton balls optional
-
Step 1
Make two yo-yos for each Christmas ornament. We use 3 1/2-inch circles, but you may use 4 1/2-inch circles, or a 3 1/2-inch and a 4 1/2-inch circle. Here's how to make a yo-yo: Cut a circle in the size you choose. Sew a 1/8-inch hem around the circle and pull the stitching to gather it. Once the yo-yo is gathered into a small circle in the center, take a few stitches to tack the gathers.
-
Step 2
Take two yo-yos for a Christmas ornament and put the flat bottoms together. If you want to make the lantern puffy, you will need to add a cotton ball or two in both the top and bottom sections. The pictured lantern ornament does not have cotton balls.
-
Step 3
Stitch only the bottom centers together by tacking by hand with needle and thread.
-
Step 4
Add a ribbon or cord for a hanger, and any trim you choose. We have added a ribbon rose to the pictured Christmas ornament. Sew more yo-yo lantern Christmas ornaments to make enough for a large or small Christmas tree.
