Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials. Built on the Windows Defender spyware removal tool, MSE provides complete virus protection to Windows XP or later. It includes real-time protection, scheduled scanning and single-file scanning.

Download the AVG Anti-Virus Free edition. This version isn't as complete as the paid AVG program, but it does include basic scanning and browsing protection. If you plan to use your computer for surfing and reading email, the protection is adequate.
