Nosebleeds can be a pretty common mishap, and they're fairly to care for and stop.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Some sort of tissue, napkin, or cloth to absorb blood
  • An ice pack in some cases
  1. Step 1

Have the person with the nosebleed sit down and lean slight forward. This is contrary to the belief that you should tilt their head back!

  2. Step 2

Pinch the nostrils together, or have the victim do so for about 10 minutes or until bleeding stops. Make sure to use the tissue for this part to catch the blood or else you'll have another mess to clean up.

  3. Step 3

Another method to control bleeding is by applying an ice pack to the bridge of the victim's nose or by putting pressure on the upper lip underneath the nose. Tissue or gauze should still be used for gathering blood.

  4. Step 4

After all the bleeding stops, make sure the victim refrains from rubbing, blowing, or picking their nose, as this could all restart the bleeding.

  5. Step 5

Medical attention is needed if the bleeding persists, recurs, or if the nosebleed is due to high blood pressure.

  6. Step 6

Also, if the victim loses consciousness, place the victim on their side to allow the blood to drain from their nose instead of falling back into their throat. In this case, EMS personnel should be contacted immediately.

  7. Step 7

Dispose of tissues, ice pack, and any other materials that might have been used to treat the nosebleed in an appropriate wastebasket.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to keep the person calm and seated while treating the nosebleed.
  • Always use universal precautions (i.e. gloves) when working with blood!
