Make a Beansstalk Costume.

Fee-fi-fo-fum, you can make a Jack and the Beanstalk costume. To make it obvious who your character is, create Jack with his beanstalk loosely wrapped around his torso. Carry a brown bag with coins and golden eggs, and you will almost be able to hear the giant thundering after Jack.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Green wired-paper ribbon
    • Green leafy garland
    • Wire cutters
    • Green floral tape
    • Styrofoam eggs
    • Gold spray paint
    • Newspaper
    • Craft knife
    • Gold plastic coins
    • Tacky glue
    • Brown paper bag with handles
    • Batting
    • White foam board
    • Safety pins
      • 1

Cut a length of green wired-paper ribbon. You may want to add several sections of the beanstalk, with smaller vines wrapped around an arm or leg.

      • 2

Bend over the ends of the green ribbon with the wire cutters. Pinch the ends together. Wrap floral tape around the bent ends to prevent injury

      • 3

Wrap the green leafy garland around the green wired ribbon to create your beanstalk.

      • 4

Wrap floral tape around the green wired-paper ribbon and the green leaf garland, securing them together. Secure any loose edges with green floral tape. Set aside this part of your Jack and the Beanstalk costume.

      • 5

Lay newspaper down on your work surface. Cut the Styrofoam eggs in half, lengthwise.

      • 6

Spray-paint the eggs. Coat the entire surface of the eggs and llow to dry completely.

      • 7

Lay the brown paper bag flat on your work surface.

      • 8

Glue gold coins and the gold spray-painted eggs to the bag. Work on one side at a time, and allow the glue to dry.

      • 9

Add tufts of batting to the brown paper bag for a cloud effect.

      • 10

Cut white foam board into a cloud shape large enough for you to cut a hole in the middle that will fit at your waist. You want to create the illusion that you are climbing through the clouds. Consider cutting the back of the cloud into a smaller shape, so you can sit down comfortably.

      • 11

Cover cloud with batting. Shape it to create a fluffy cloud effect.

      • 12

Try on your costume. Place the beanstalk where you want it and safety-pin it into place. Cover the safety pins with green floral tape or batting, depending upon where you are attaching it.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Select a green leafy garland with big leaves for a bean leaf effect.

    • You can create the Jack and the Beanstalk costume without the cloud.

    • Cut an area out of your cloud where the beanstalk can be “growing” through.

    • Safety-pin the batting to your shirt or jacket to help hold the cloud in place.

    • If you wear a jacket with a hood, safety-pin the beanstalk to the top of your hood.
