convert protected MP3s to unprotected MP3s

This article was written for people who legally purchased and downloaded MP3s that are protected or in different formats and want to be able to play those songs on their MP3 player for personal use.

The nice thing about being able to purchase MP3s online is the flexibility and availability of great music. The frustrating part for some people is not being able to play these MP3s on their MP3 player due to the devices inability to read the protected MP3 or format.

This article shows how to convert those songs into a general MP3 format such as converting WMA to MP3.

There are many MP3 software packages out there, but my personal favorite is working with iTunes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase songs. After you legally buy mp3 music, create a play-list in iTunes.

  2. Step 2

Create an audio CD. Take your playlist and burn an audio CD. In iTunes, there will be a “Burn Disc” button at the bottom right corner of your screen.

  3. Step 3

Set your mp3 decoder. In iTunes, click on “edit” at the top left of your screen. You will then click “preferences” located at the bottom of the pull down menu.

  4. Step 4

Under the “General” tab, look down to where it says: “When you insert CD: Ask to Import CD”, click “Import Settings…”

  5. Step 5

On “Import Settings” look to “Import Using: AAC Encoder”. Change that to “MP3 Encoder”. Click “Okay” and this will close preferences screen.

  6. Step 6

Make sure your recently burned audio CD is in your CD drive. On iTunes, click “Import CD” on the bottom right corner of your screen. ITunes will now convert the songs to a general MP3 Format. You may need to rename the songs. Sometimes they will show up in your library as “track 1” “track 2” etc….Write down your playlist prior to the conversion process in case you need to do that.
