Salt stains on leather shoes can ruin the shoes. You have to clean the salt off. The salt will corrode the leather and eat away at it. During the snowy and icy winter salt is used on roads, sidewalks, driveways and stairs to melt the ice and keep anyone from falling. Unfortunately, you have to walk on those sidewalks, roads, driveways and stairs which puts your shoes at risk for salt damage. The best way to avoid white salt stains and leather shoe damage is to keep your shoes polished. The shoe polish will give your shoes a barrier between the damaging salt and the leather. You will still have salt stains, but the leather of your shoes will have a little bit more protection.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Mix ¼ of cup of water with 2 tablespoons of white vinegar.

  2. Step 2

Dip a clean, soft, white rag into the white vinegar and water mixture. If you are cleaning suede shoes dip a clean nylon scrubber such as one you would use in the shower or bath.

  3. Step 3

Blot the salt stains with the wet rag. Continue until the white salt stain is gone. Do not rub the stain because it can spread. For suede shoes, gently scrub the suede in a circular motion with the nylon scrubber.

  4. Step 4

Use a clean, dry, white rag to dry your shoes. For suede, allow the shoes to air dry then gently brush with a suede brush.
