How to Remove a GM Power Steering Pump Pully
The power steering pump is a key part of your vehicle, and if it goes out, steering can get sloppy and jerky, potentially causing an accident. Replacing a power steering pump isn't that simple; you have to remove the power steering pump pulley first. Doing that requires some special tools, but they can be rented at a parts store. In this case, the project is a power steering pulley from a GM truck.
Things You'll Need
- Power steering pump pulley puller
- 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
- Adjustable wrench
Instructions

-
1
Mount the collar that is included with the puller kit onto the center of the pulley at the base, centered on the center hole.
-
2
Mount the pulley tool to the middle of the power steering pump pulley, with the nut on the puller toward the outside of the pump and going through the collar.
-
-
3
Secure the nut on the collar using an adjustable wrench and tighten the bolt onto the pulley using the 3/8-inch ratchet. By doing this, the pulley will be pulled off straight and will not scar the bearings.
-
4
Remove the pulley from the power steering pump once it comes off the power steering pump.
