How to Fix Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that runs parallel to the side of the foot and into the heel. It is the largest tendon in the human body, and is one of the most common places of injury. This injury is called Achilles tendonitis, and although the condition may be treated with at-home procedures such as massage and rest, more severe cases require physical therapy or strengthening exercises.

    Treatment for Achilles Tendonitis

  1. Step 1

    For mild to moderate symptoms or pain, at-home care should be administered. Patients should massage the inflamed area twice daily and stretch often. Do not continue stretching if you experience pain. Patients should also rest between eight to 10 hours daily. Refrain from physical activity until the condition has healed. To reduce pain and discomfort, pain-relievers and ice packs may be used.

  2. Step 2

    Speak with a doctor or orthopedist to determine the level of the condition, particulary if pain is severe. Anti-inflammatory injections may be administered to reduce pain and inflammation. Prescription pain relievers may also be prescribed to reduce discomfort. In some cases, patients may be advised to see a physical therapist for specialized strength-training exercises.

  3. Step 3

    Patients who have suffered from injuries of the Achilles tendon should take precautions to avoid a repeat injury. Athletes should stretch before and after physical activity, and should stop if they experience pain. Wear comfortable footwear with cushioning and good arch support. Shoe inserts may also be used to increase cushioning and comfort.

  • If applying ice to the injury, it is essential not not to put the ice directly on the skin. Instead, wrap the ice pack in a washcloth or paper towel. Alternate with 20 minutes of ice and 20 minutes without ice until the pain and discomfort subsides.
