How to Choose a Good Hand Mixer for the Kitchen

A good hand mixer is a necessity for nearly any kitchen. While stand mixers are ideal for frequent bakers, they are an unnecessary investment for your average kitchen. A good hand mixer can handle most cookie-, cake- and quick bread-making tasks easily without taking up the counter space required for a stand mixer. Consider your needs, cooking habits and budget when choosing a hand mixer.

  1. Step 1

    Look for a hand mixer with adequate power. Choose one with a 175-watt motor at minimum; however, higher wattage can be helpful if you bake frequently.

  2. Step 2

    Invest in a name brand for improved durability and better warranty service. Consider brands like KitchenAid or Cuisinart, especially if you bake regularly.

  3. Step 3

    Buy a mixer with no fewer than six speeds. Reduce spattering with a mixer that includes a slow start feature.

  4. Step 4

    Pick up and handle the hand mixers you are considering. Lift the mixer, keeping in mind that you may need to hold the weight of a hand mixer for 5 to 10 minutes at a time. Opt for a hand mixer with a comfortable handle angled slightly upward toward the beaters and a total weight of under 2 pounds.

  5. Step 5

    Consider cleanup. Try the beater release, checking for ease of use. Check for seams, buttons and dials, poor placement of which can food accumulation on your hand mixer.
