How to Wash Foam Cushions

Furniture cushions, decorative pillows, sleeping pillows and mattress toppers often have an inner stuffing made from foam. If the foam is covered with water-resistant fabric, it's unlikely the foam will get dirty or stained. Washing foam cushions is a simple process that anyone can manage using items that are probably already in your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1/4 cup dishwashing liquid into a bathtub and fill the bathtub 3/4 full of hot water.

    • 2

Place the cushions flat in the bathtub, taking care to maintain the shape of the cushion. Do not scrunch the cushions, or you may permanently change the shape. Allow the cushions to soak for 30 minutes.

    • 3

Scrub the cushions with a soft-bristled brush to remove dirt.

    • 4

Drain the soapy water from the bathtub, and rinse the cushions in cool, clean water. If you have an outdoor water hose, it is easier to rinse the cushions with the hose. Make sure you remove all the soap from the cushions.

    • 5

Air dry the cushions in a well-ventilated room or outdoors. Do not place covers on the foam cushions until they are completely dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never put foam cushions in the washer or dryer. Commercial washers and dryers can damage and change the shape of the foam.
