How to Size New Construction Windows

Measuring windows for a new construction project is a simple process. However, you must submit the correct measurements to the window manufacturer. In the case of custom-built windows, they may not be returned if sized incorrectly. In the case of standard-size windows, the manufacturer will typically assess a restocking fee for windows returned to them.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

On your legal pad, list the rooms for which you will be measuring windows. List the number of windows for each room. Using your directional compass, determine which wall in the room is on the north, south, east and west side of the room. Record this directional information with each window. If there is more than one window on any given wall, make sure to designate in in this manner: "first window from the left," "second window from the left" and so on.

Window measurements are always communicated to the window manufacturer as "width x height." Use that same format when writing down each of your measurements.

    • 3

Measure the width of the rough opening in which the window will be installed. Subtract 1 in. from the total dimension, and write down the adjusted measurement. Repeat the process for the height. The dimensions you have indicated are the actual dimensions to which the window will be built. These figures are referred to as the "actual window dimensions" or the "adjusted opening dimensions."

Measure and list all the "actual window dimensions" on your legal pad. Review them for accuracy and neatness before submitting to the manufacturer or to the service personnel at the local home center.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure all your dimensions are accurate, and legible. Round up any dimensions to the nearest 1/8 inch.

  • Because of the lag time between ordering and receiving windows, and the expense in custom window manufacturing, triple-check your dimensions. Accuracy at this point in the process will ensure that you receive correctly sized windows.
