How to Craft Hanging Lanterns
Ever wonder what to do with all of the empty pickle, jelly, even baby food jars? Do not throw them away. Consider using them to craft hanging lanterns to light up the backyard. With a few quick steps, you can create a peaceful ambiance in no time at all.
Things You'll Need
- Jelly jar
- Fine gauge metal wire
- Wire cutters
- Needle nose pliers
- Votive candle

Completely wash the jelly jar with soap and water. Remove the label.

Cut about 24 inches of wire using the wire cutters. Form a ring by bending the wire around the jar. Be sure it is under the lip of the jar. Use the needle nose pliers to twist the wires together close to the jar. Secure the wire, but leave a little slack so that you can attach a handle.

When the ring is formed, you will have about two 8 inch wires originating from where the circle is twisted and closed.

Bend the leftover wire over the top of the jelly jar. Attach it to the wire ring which creates a wire handle.

Put the votive candle in the jar.

Hang it on a branch outside or attach a hook to a wall, and hang it there.

Tips & Warnings
Create peaceful effect outside by using several different sized jars. Paint the outside of the jar with acrylic paints or glass frosting spray.
If you hang it on a tree, place it far enough up the branch so if it is windy it will not slip off the branch. Always be careful when using an open flame. Never leave the candles unsupervised.
