How to Grill With Cedar Planks
Using a cedar planks is a great way to add flavor to a grilled dish such as salmon. Cedar planks can commonly be found in grocery stores; check near the seafood section. Procure cedar planks suitable for grilling at your local grocery store. If you opt to make the planks yourself by purchasing wood from a hardware store, make sure the cedar you purchase is untreated.

Soak the planks for between four to six hours; overnight is okay too. To soak the planks, place them in a tub (such as a roasting pan) full of water and use something weighty to keep the planks submerged.

Toss herbs or other spices into the water if you would like to add different flavorings.

Remove the cedar planks from the water after they have soaked for at least four hours.

Wipe excess water off your planks and coat the tops lightly with olive oil.

Place salmon or other meat on the cedar planks.

Place the prepared planks on a preheated grill.

Keep your eye on the planks; if they catch fire, use a spray bottle of water to douse the flames. Allow the plank to smolder; this will add flavor to your fish or meat.

Use a meat thermometer to check the interior temperature of the fish or meat you are grilling; cook the fish or meat until it reaches the required temperature and preferred level of doneness.

Check to make sure the plank is not on fire when the cooking is complete. Remove it from the grill and place it on a heat-safe platter.

To serve, either remove the grilled fish or meat from the plank and place it on a plate, or place the plank itself on a plate.
