How to Live Trap a Fox
Foxes are a natural predator that feed on anything they can find. Foxes have a reputation for taking advantage of poultry and livestock farmers as well as capturing small pets. Since they are a wild animal, foxes carry diseases and parasites so it is in the best interest of the trapper to consider using gloves when handling foxes. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- No. 1 1/2 coil spring trap
- Trap stakes
- Trowel
- Gloves
- Hammer with claw
- Scent

Determine a location where the fox often travels; for example, hunting trails, carcass trails, or near dens.

Dig a hole 6 inches deep and 3 inches across. For best results, dig the hole with a slight downward slant. Place four to five drops of scent at the back of the hole.

Dig a second 2 inch deep hole in back of the bait hole. This hole should be large enough to accommodate the spring trap.

Attach the trap chain to a trap stake and drive the stake directly under the place where the trap is set. Place the chain under the trap. Set the trap 1/2 inch below the ground. Set the tension in the trap to avoid mice and other smaller animals setting off the trap.

Place a piece of waxed paper over the trap and cover the trap in sifted dirt until it is level with the ground.

Tips & Warnings
Check the traps twice each day to ensure any captured foxes are removed from the trap in a timely manner.
According to the Internet Center for Wildlife Damage Management handbook, in the United States foxes are listed as furbearers or given some status as game animals by most state governments. Most states allow for the taking of foxes to protect private property. Check with your state wildlife agency for regulations before undertaking fox control measures.
