Before shopping for mattresses, plan a budget of what you can spend. Better-feeling mattresses tend to cost more, so tell your salesman what you are able to spend and eliminate extra choices. A good mattress and box should cost at least $1,000, but can cost $3,000 or more.

If you are a back sleeper, go with something softer to help align the heavier parts of your body, which will sink into the mattress. If you sleep on your stomach, get a firmer mattress so it presses against your body, keeping it aligned. Side sleepers can go either way but usually prefer a softer mattress.

Pay attention to the inside of a mattress, particularly coil counts. If selecting a queen-size mattress, get one with a coil count of 700 or more. The more coils, the more durable your mattress will be. A higher count also means less sagging.

Also pay attention to the foams. Latex and visco are the most durable and are consequently the most expensive. Just the first 1/4-inch on the top of a mattress may be made of one of these foams, or the full mattress may be latex or visco.
