How to Get a Job in a Orange County Florida Public School Cafeteria
With nearly 175,000 students and more than 23,000 employees, the Orange County Public School System can be a very busy place. Tens of thousands of students go through cafeterias in the district each day the schools are open, and all need someone to serve them. Thus, the need for cafeteria workers is clearly evident, but the jobs can also be quite competitive, especially during times of high unemployment. Those seeking a job can follow these very specific steps to increase their chances of employment.
Instructions
-
Initial Application
-
1
Log onto the school district's employment website using a computer. The Orange County Public School System has an application system that nearly everyone must use, whether seeking a teaching position or looking to work in a school cafeteria.
-
2
Look for job openings on the Job Vacancy page. Here you will find a list of all open positions in all school buildings; cafeteria positions are listed under "Classified/Non-Instructional," which is located near the bottom of the page.
-
-
3
Follow the on-screen instructions to create a job seeker account. In your profile, detail your work experience, especially in the food service industry.
-
4
Request an emailed questionnaire; complete and return it. If you answer the questions satisfactorily, you will receive an invitation to apply for open positions.
-
5
Apply online for any open positions and wait for a response. If your qualifications, based on your answers in your candidate profile and email questions, are acceptable, you may be called for an interview.
-
6
Go to the interview and answer the questions to the best of your ability. Be prepared to answer questions about general food service, as well as food preparation and state food preparation laws.
Pre-Employment
-
7
Get fingerprinted. Set up your appointment online via the school's website. All appointments are held at independent facilities, so plan transportation to your appointment. Fingerprints are taken electronically: don't worry about getting ink on your fingers or clothes.
-
8
Submit to a background check and drug test, required for all Orange County Public School System employees.
-
9
Complete the Industrial Physical Capacity Services evaluation, which will rate your ability to do the job. The evaluation is required for all cafeteria workers and may be required for a number of other jobs as well.
-
10
Attend a new employee orientation as required.

Tips & Warnings
Always complete your online profile before sending in any questionnaires. This will speed up the application process. Bring a resume to your job interview, just in case there are any questions not answered in the online profile.
Though you may have been offered a job, final employment is contingent upon completion of all these steps of the Pre-Employment Process.
