How to Cut a Pattern for Mowing a Lawn

Set the wheels of your mower so that the mower deck is 3 inches from the ground. Perform a safety check of the mower. Look to see if any wires or hoses are loose, the blade is in working shape, and be sure there are no leaks from the engine. Start your mower.

Mow a complete strip around the outer perimeter of the yard. Place the outer wheels of your mower just inside of the inner wheel marks from the first circuit and mow a second circuit around the outer perimeter.

Mow a complete strip around the inner perimeter of the yard. Place the inner wheels of your mower just inside of the outside wheel marks from the first circuit and mow a second circuit around the inner perimeter.

Start in the front of the house and mow a line parallel to the front of the house. Place your wheels just inside of the wheel marks from that first line and continue the angle of this cut as you work your way to the curb.

Continue your same slightly overlapped pattern down both sides of the house and through the backyard to the rear of the property. Whenever you come to an obstruction, mow a double strip around the obstruction and continue your pattern with the rest of the lawn.
