Know all of the colors that cannot be altered. The porch will need to work with these colors because colors cannot change to work with your porch. Keep the colors of the following in mind: roofing shingles, brick, stone, slate and your yard. Try not to choose a color that clashes with these things. For example, if your house has a lot of gray stone accents, a brightly colored porch might not work with the stone. A green porch may get lost in the colors of the grass in the spring and summer.

Consider the location of your house. The sun plays a big role in the appearance of paint. If you live in the south where it is sunny most of the time, bright colors work well. In the north, bright colors may stand out because the sky is generally gray, and the forecast lacks sun from mid-autumn to mid-spring.

Study all the colors you are interested in. Visualize how they may look in contrast to your house, your neighbors' houses and your yard. Use color samples from the paint store to compare the colors on the samples to the colors of your house and yard. Also compare them to windowsills, window panes and other accents of your house. Some houses are old and cannot have window panes repainted. Hold the sample up to the sun to see how the color might look on a sunny day.
