Instructions

  1. Lacquered Brass Beds

    • 1

Dust a lacquered brass bed with a camel hair brush or soft cloth to keep free from dust, according to Bernard's, on a regular basis.

    • 2

Dampen a soft cloth and wipe off the headboard and footboard. Water won't damage the protective lacquer coating.

    • 3

Dry the brass to a beautiful shine with a separate cloth. Lacquered brass doesn't tarnish or discolor.

    Unlaquered Brass Beds

    • 4

Dust an unlaquered brass bed as needed to care for it and keep it clean.

    • 5

Clean tarnish off with tomato ketchup and a cloth. Place a dollop of ketchup onto a dry rag, according to Group Recipes.

    • 6

Rub the tomato ketchup over the tarnished areas on the brass bed until the tarnish lifts. Wipe off the remaining ketchup with a clean rag and buff the brass to a shine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Brass tarnishes from exposure to air. That's why brass beds are sometimes coated with a lacquer finish to protect them.

  • Once the protective lacquer coating on a brass bed is removed, the alloy will tarnish. That's why you should not clean it with cleaners and polishes.
