How to Mount a Mirror to a Closet Door

Mounting a mirror to a closet door allows you to hide the mirror when you are not using it. You can mount a mirror on a closet door in a bedroom, foyer or even a dorm room. The closet door is a great location for a full-length mirror, especially when you have no room for the mirror anywhere else.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Power drill
  • Smallest available drill bit
  • Industrial-strength glue
  • Latex gloves
  • Screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Power saw
  • Short piece of 2-inch by 4-inch lumber
  1. Step 1

Measure the width of your mirror to determine where you will mount it so you can center it on the door. Mark with a pencil the spots on the door where the four corners of the mirror will be.

  2. Step 2

Determine for how long you want the mirror to be attached to the door. Consider whether you are willing to leave the mirror on the closet door permanently, even if you move. Determine whether or not the door is hollow if you do not already know. Do this by knocking on the door, or drilling a small hole in the door (in a spot that will be covered by the mirror). If the drill bit pushes through easily, the door is hollow, which means you will not be able to use a common picture frame mounting method to hang the mirror.

  3. Step 3

To mount on a hollow door: Apply a thick layer of industrial-strength glue to the back of the mirror and attach the mirror to the designated spot on the closet door. Wear latex gloves to protect your skin. Hold the mirror in place and allow the glue to dry for a few minutes.

  4. Step 4

To mount on a solid door: Drive screws through the mirror's frame or the pre-drilled holes in the actual mirror. To avoid cracking the mirror or frame, do not drive the screws as tightly as possible.

  5. Step 5

Create a simple mounting bracket for frameless mirrors without pre-drilled mounting holes. Cut four small triangular pieces of wood from a two-by-four or other piece of lumber. The triangles should all be of the same size, large enough to allow two screws at opposite points.

Lap the triangle pieces over the mirror corners so that enough of the wood sticks out above the door for screws to be driven through without hitting the mirror. You don't have to glue the wooden triangles to the mirror: The triangles cover the corners of the mirror and prevent the supporting nails from sticking out and snagging clothes or causing injuries. Use this mounting-bracket method only on solid doors.
