Instructions

    • 1

Paint the outside of the garage white. This color will reflect a lot of the Sun's rays instead of drawing it into your garage.

    • 2

Speak with a roof contractor, if you have a garage that has its own roof, and see if you can get reflective roof coatings. Reflective roof coating also deflects the rays from the sun, thus helping to keep your garage cool.

    • 3

Install a roof exhaust vent that will allow the hot air to escape, cooling your garage.

    • 4

Plant trees and shrubs that will cast shadows onto your garage. There are several trees and bushes that you can purchase that grow in very little time. This is also a good option if you want to add to your curb appeal.

    • 5

Purchase an evaporative cooler and place it in your garage. These are less expensive and does not use the same amount of electricity of an air conditioner. These coolers work by using a fan that draws in the hot air through a wet pad, as the water evaporates the air cools. It can cool your garage by up to 20 degrees F.

    • 6

Install an air conditioning unit with exhaust vent. This will effectively cool your garage and you can purchase smaller units that do not take much room, or use as much power and electricity.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also place solar panels on your roof instead of roof coating. This will help you save energy. Evaporative coolers are also known as swamp coolers. Having your attached garage cooler will also lower the temperature inside your house, thereby lowering your energy bill. An inexpensive way to cool your garage is to open it during the hours when there is no sun. Opening it in the mornings and evenings, when the temperature is cooler, allows the garage to dispel heat that has collected inside.
