Because of the high humidity in a vessel's engine room, separating water from the diesel fuel that powers your generators or main propulsion is essential in a marine environment. Specialized filters called "fuel water separators" use removable filter cartridges that stand up vertically to separate the water from the fuel. Once the filter cartridge separates the water from the fuel, the water---heavier than the fuel---drains into a basin at the bottom of the filter, to be drained when the cartridge is changed.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drain pan or tray
  • Replacement filter cartridge and "O" ring
  1. Step 1

Set a drain pan or tray on the engine room flooring near the separator. Remove a fresh filter cartridge and the plastic packet containing an "O" ring type gasket from its box. Set the filter cartridge on the flooring next to the drain pan.

  2. Step 2

Turn the "T" handle on top of the separator counterclockwise to unscrew the top of the separator. Use the "T" to lift the top off of the separator. Set the cap down in the drain pan.

  3. Step 3

Lift the filter cartridge by the plastic handles on the top or sides of the filter body, while turning the filter body counterclockwise. Set the filter into a drain tray or pan and pick up the new filter body.

  4. Step 4

Pick the new filter cartridge up by its plastic handles and lower it into the filter chamber while twisting it clockwise. It will slide down over the tube in the center of the chamber.

  5. Step 5

Remove the "O" ring from its plastic packet and set the "O" ring in the groove on top of the new filter cartridge. Fill the separator with clean diesel fuel, replace the cap on the separator and turn the "T" handle clockwise to tighten the cap.

  6. Step 6

Move the drain pan under the clear plastic bowl on the bottom of the separator assembly. Turn the valve on the bottom of the clear plastic bowl and drain the water and debris from the bowl.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fully drain the used cartridges and dispose of the used cartridges in a covered metal trash can.
  • This project involves working with diesel fuel. Observe all appropriate cautions.
