How to Get Rid of Bats at a Cottage

Bats thrive in wooded areas, making cottages and cabins especially prone to bat habitation. A bat's primary source of food is mosquitoes. This means that any property in close proximity to water, where mosquitoes gather, is also vulnerable. Some will find that they enjoy having bats around to control the mosquito population. For those who want to get rid of the bats living around their cottage or cabin, there are simple and effective ways to chase the bats elsewhere. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Spray cat or dog repellent on the surfaces of the area where the bats are living. Do this when the bats are all out gathering food, because it is dangerous to spray the repellent directly onto a bat.

    • 2

Place a handful of moth balls onto a square of cheesecloth. Bring the corners of the cheesecloth together and tie to create a small sack. Tie the sack and hang it in the area where the bats are living.

    • 3

Cut strips of aluminum foil and hang them in the bat area. Make sure the strips of foil will move in the wind. This will make the area unfavorable for bats, as they prefer quiet spaces.

If you do not have success on your own, call an animal professional. They are skilled in capturing bats and can release them far from your cottage.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contrary to popular belief, using garlic or loud noises to get rid of bats is not effective.

  • Do not get too close to the bats. Do not get rid of bats during the winter. They are hibernating during this time and will not be able to survive elsewhere. If you are going to exterminate any bats, check the regulations in your area. In many places it is illegal to kill certain species of bats. Do not attempt to set your own homemade bat trap.
