Selecting kitchen lighting for your space can be a challenging and overwhelming task. With a wide array of lighting to choose from, you can create a kitchen that encompasses both form and function. Kitchen lighting comes in many different colors, styles and prices. Add your own personal touch to your lighting choices, and create a welcoming kitchen where everyone gathers to cook and socialize. Selecting lighting can make all the difference in a room, and choosing the right kitchen lighting can create a space full of good food and ambiance.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the dimensions of your kitchen area. Note the height of the ceiling.

  2. Step 2

Write down the types and locations of light fixtures you have now and what you would like to add. You will take this information with you to your lighting or home improvement store.

  3. Step 3

Document how you use your kitchen. You may want a light under the counters where you prepare food. You may want a light over an eating area that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

  4. Step 4

Check your electrical wiring. You may have to update your wiring or add wiring in locations that currently don't have lighting.

  5. Step 5

Determine how much wattage you need. Task lighting should allow you to see your work area. Eating areas may benefit from a kitchen light fixture that sheds softer light.

  6. Step 6

Utilize the size of your kitchen. A large kitchen will allow you to decide if you want a large light fixture with several lights or several smaller, more intimately-lit areas.

  7. Step 7

Choose the colors and designs for your kitchen lighting. Matching the fixtures you have in the rest of your house will create a unified look but is not necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Draw a simple outline of your kitchen. Draw the walls and door openings first. Add the cabinet locations and the table area. Take this sketch with you to your lighting or home improvement store. Consider separate switches for your lighting areas so you can turn on lights only where you are working or entertaining. Dimmer switches can add just enough light and save energy
  • Hire an electrician if you are not sure how to replace your current lighting.
