How to Replace a Bissell Vacuum Belt
Bissell vacuum cleaners have several parts that tend to wear out over time and need to be replaced periodically. Included among these consumer-installable parts is the vacuum drive belt. This belt rotates the brush roller, which helps the vacuum pick up as much dirt and debris as possible. If you notice that your Bissell vacuum isn't picking things up like it should, check the drive belt to see if it needs to be replaced. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Turn off the vacuum cleaner and remove the power cord from the wall socket to protect yourself from electrical shock.
-
2
Press the latch to release the handle and lower the handle to the floor. Flip the vacuum over so that the bottom is facing up. This will give you access to the brush cover plate and belt.

3
Remove the brush cover plate. Plate removal directions may differ among the many Bissell models. Identify if there are obvious screws that hold the plate in place or if there are tabs that must be released. The most effective method is to visually follow the border of the plate and see how it is attached.

4
Remove the brush roller by lifting the end opposite the belt from the notch that contains it. Slide the belt off the other end of the roller. Inspect the roller and remove any hair, strings or debris from the brush roller.
-
5
Grasp the belt and slide it off the motor pulley. Discard the worn or broken belt.
-
6
Place the new belt over the motor pulley and slide the brush roller through the belt so that the belt lies in the belt groove.
-
7
Gently pull the roller so that the belt is taut, then snap the ends of the brush roller into the notches in the frame. Rotate the roller to make sure that it turns smoothly.
-
8
Replace the brush cover plate. Ensure that all screws are put back in place or that all tabs and latches are realigned.
