Winterizing your swimming pool is essential to preventing damage to the pool and its accessories. The pool's pump is a vital component in its filter system, and must be properly stored to protect it during the winter. Follow the same procedure for both inground and above ground pools. Prepare the pool and pump early to prevent damage from a surprise frost.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Towel
  • Plastic or tarp
  1. Step 1

Turn the power off and disconnect the pump from the pool filter. Wipe away any dirt or algae that has accumulated on the pump.

  2. Step 2

Drain the pump completely. Turn it upside down to ensure that all the water has been removed. Let the pump air dry or wipe with a towel before storing to prevent mold growth.

  3. Step 3

Remove any drain plugs or other small parts. Store all pump parts in the pump basket to prevent losing them.

  4. Step 4

Loosen all screws around where your pump attaches to the filter. This will prevent cracking when the temperature drops below freezing.

  5. Step 5

Store the pump in a shed or garage. Cover it with plastic sheets or a tarp for protection. Keep it off the floor to prevent animals from getting inside and chewing on the parts.
