How to Become a Certified Case Manager Online

Case managers are responsible for evaluating the health care needs of patients. They must display excellent communication skills and use various resources to meet the requirements of their clients. With the increasing demand for case managers, practice and certification are a necessity. Case manager certification serves as evidence of knowledge, skill and experience. It also helps prospective case managers fulfill the educational requirements that employers often use as a basis for hiring.

  • Visit the CCMC (Commission for Case Manager Certification) website to download a guide that will help you determine if you are an eligible candidate or certification. Applicants are required to meet three basic requirements: prior experience in managing cases, a license to practice independently and good moral character.

  • Begin an online application at and submit the processing fee. Your employer will be required to send an employment verification form to the designated address, and you will need to submit license verification. Check the website for application deadlines in the spring, summer, and winter.

  • Wait to receive your ATT (Authorization to Test) from the CCMC via e-mail, then schedule an exam with the Prometric testing center nearest you, which must be taken in person. Review the sample questions included in the CCMC certification guide and the glossary on the website to prepare for the exam.

  • Take the exam consisting of 180 multiple-choice questions that must be completed within three hours. Allow at least eight weeks to receive your results, which you may check on the CCMC website. Your CCMC certification will be valid for five years, after which you will need to renew it with continuing education credits.
