One component of controlling high blood pressure involves being able to keep an accurate record of your readings at all times. A helpful tool in blood pressure monitoring is a home blood pressure monitor. Two types of blood pressure monitors are designed for home use: an upper arm model and a wrist model, the latter of which is addressed in this article. When using a wrist blood pressure monitor, take extra care to use it properly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wrist blood pressure monitor
  1. Step 1

Follow the monitor's instructions to perform the initial setup of the unit. This will involve setting the time, date, and other basic settings.

  2. Step 2

Avoid eating, smoking, and all physical activity for at least 10 minutes before you take a reading, for a more accurate read. Find a comfortable place to sit and relax.

  3. Step 3

Fit the blood pressure cuff around your wrist. The control panel should be on the inside of your wrist. There should be about a finger's width between the cuff and your hand.

  4. Step 4

Secure the cuff snugly around your wrist using the Velcro strap. It should be snug, but not overly tight.

  5. Step 5

Rest your arm on a table or other flat surface with your palm facing up. You want the cuff to be resting at the same level of your heart, so use a cushion if necessary.

  6. Step 6

Complete any preliminary selections as required by your monitor. For example, if your blood pressure monitor is designed to track multiple users, select the user to track your readings.

  7. Step 7

Take your blood pressure reading. This will be done via either a, "Go" button or a, "Start" button.

  8. Step 8

Remain still and relaxed as the cuff inflates. Any movement at this point will cause your blood pressure to rise, skewing the reading. When it is finished, the cuff will deflate and your blood pressure will be displayed on the control panel.

  9. Step 9

Record your reading in the blood pressure monitor's memory if you are tracking your blood pressure levels over time. The exact procedure will vary, so be sure to check your manual.

  10. Step 10

Turn off the blood pressure monitor and put it away.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remove any jewelry, such as watches or bracelets, from your wrist to ensure accuracy. Always take your measurement on the same wrist to ensure consistency. Read the instruction manual carefully to ensure that you are using the cuff correctly.
