How to Recover From Colon Cancer

Colon Cancer generally starts in the large intestine or the rectum. This type of cancer is also called colorectal cancer. The option for getting rid of the cancer is to have surgery to remove the cancerous cells from the infected area. After your surgery is complete, there are some things that you will need to do to get started on your road to recovery.

Instructions

    • 1

Chew sugarless gum for 1 hour three times daily. There is a loss of appetite after having colon surgery and more than likely, you will not be able to eat. Also, it will take a while for you to resume normal bowel activity, so chewing sugarless gum will set off the same reflexes as eating, stimulating gastrointestinal hormones connected with bowel activity.

    • 2

Keep all follow-up appointments. Keeping all scheduled appointments after your surgery will ensure that you are on the right track and will be able to resume normal activities. Also, your doctor may need to run additional tests.

    • 3

No heavy lifting. You will need to take it easy and refrain from lifting any more than 10 lbs. You may incur serious damage or complications, so ask a family or friend to assist you in lifting household items.

    • 4

Follow all dietary instructions. For the first few days, you may be given a liquid diet. This may be difficult if you have the desire to eat, but until your body resumes its natural functions, you will need to adhere to this strict diet.

    • 5

Get plenty of rest. Having surgery can steal all of your energy and leave you feeling rather tired mentally and physically. Refrain from going back to work until your doctor gives you the approval. Designate family and friends to help you around the house and run your errands for you.

Tips & Warnings
