How to Fix a Maytag Dryer

The Maytag Washing Machine Company was founded by Frederick Maytag in 1893. As one of the few companies to survive the Great Depression, the company continues to lead the home appliance market in everything from dishwashers to clothing dryers.

The problem with appliances is that they sometimes need to be fixed. While you can always call a professional repairman to repair your Maytag dryer if it is not working, there are a few things you can try to fix the dryer yourself before making that call.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check household fuses and circuit breakers. If the circuit breakers have been tripped, replace the fuse(s) or reset the circuit breaker(s). Also, check the power supply. Electric dryers require a power supply of at least 240 volts. If the problem continues, the source may be due to electrical failure. Call an electrician for further assistance.

  2. Step 2

Close the dryer door firmly. The door may not be fully closed, even if it looks shut; the latch may not be properly engaged. If you have a model with both an upper and lower latch, both must be secure in order for the dryer to run.

  3. Step 3

Press down on the the "Start" button for at least 5 seconds before letting go. The larger the load, the more you will need to press down on the button to get it to start.

  4. Step 4

Check the "Cycle Control" knob or "Sensor Dry." Some models will not start if set on the "Wrinkle Prevent" option.

  5. Step 5

Turn off the "Controls Lock" feature. Some models will not start if the "Controls Lock" feature is on. Press and hold the "Cycle Signal" for three seconds to turn it off.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you recently installed a power supply cord it may also be incorrectly installed. Review installation instructions. If you do not have a manual, you can look up a manual with the model number for your unit.
