Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Select containers to grow your herbs in that will fit in your windowsill, have good drainage and enough space for the herbs to grow. Proper drainage and pot size are important. Too much water in the herb container will cause the plants to become waterlogged and potentially drown. In addition, a container that is too small will prevent the herbs from growing successfully.

    • 2

Buy herb plants or purchase seeds from your local garden center where you will find a wide variety of seeds and plants. Some of the most popular herb plants include chives, oregano, basil, parsley, rosemary and mint. Most any herb will grow in your windowsill planters if you care for it properly.

    • 3

Select a location for your windowsill herb garden where there is sunlight and that you have easy access to. No particular exposure is needed, as long as there is ample sunlight.

    • 4

Buy a non-soil potting mix and a misting bottle, as well as fertilizer that you can mix with water. The non-soil potting mix is made of organic materials and allows for good drainage of the herbs when they are watered and prevents the herbs from being affected by soil-type diseases. The misting bottle will be used for watering your herbs once they have been planted, as well as fertilizing your herbs. Simply mix the fertilizer into the water in the misting bottle and you can fertilize every time you water, or whenever the soil begins to dry.

    Plant

    • 5

Fill the container with the non-soil potting mix, leaving a 1 inch space at the top for watering.

    • 6

Plant the herb or seeds in the container about 1 inch deep and cover with potting mix.

    • 7

Place the plant in the window and water as needed. There should be a damp feel to the potting mix, but it should not be saturated in water. If saturation occurs, immediately drain off the excess liquid.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the plant at least once a week to make sure that there is no standing water in the pot and the water has drained off well. Be sure to add fertilizer to the water mister at least once a month.
