See if a local shop or school is willing to paint you car for free to practice painting or designs. Every artist must start somewhere. For a total paint job, the artist will need certain tools and equipment. But for stripes, detailing and free-hand designs, you might be able to find an artist just starting out who will practice on your car.

You or someone who is handy with a sewing machine can make seat covers and headrest covers. You'll just need some fabric and thread. Find free patterns online and use them to make your own from brown paper grocery bags. If you want initials or designs on your seat covers or headrest covers, call in a favor from a friend who has an embroidery machine.

Upgrade your car stereo when someone else upgrades his--ask friends or family members who are getting rid of an old stereo if you can have it. If not, check Freecycle.org and Craigslist.org. When people upgrade they are usually more than happy to pass their old stereo on to someone who will use it rather than just tossing it.

Freecycle and Craiglist also are good places to find free rims and tires. So too are your friends' and relatives' garages.
-
5
Get free decals from car shows, audio stores and tire and rim shops. Some brands have very cool decals, stickers and bumper stickers that they give away because they want you to stick them on your car or truck for free advertising.

Tips & Warnings
Buy inexpensive material for car seat covers or headrests in the fabric section at Walmart or a local fabric store. Many materials can be purchased for $1 or $2 a yard. Search eBay for patches bearing sports logos and brand names that can be used on the covers.
