Old houses are interesting and many people prefer the styles of the past. However, there are a number of issues that you must deal with in an older home that don't exist in new models. Wooden windows are often a problem. The wood expands and settles over time and it is likely that a previous owner has painted the frame. A window that is closed before the paint has dried becomes a constant problem, often becoming stuck permanently. Try these steps to unstick the window before spending a lot of money on a new one.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Wear protective clothing including gloves and eye protection. Glass may shatter if too much pressure is put on the window.

  2. Step 2

Determine if there is anything that is physically holding the window in place. A window can be stuck if there is something wedged in the frame, or if it has been nailed shut.

  3. Step 3

Look for paint on each window edge, both inside and outside. Scrape away paint that may have dried and sealed the window. Push the paint scraper into the edge and gently work it back and forth to remove the seal that has formed.

  4. Step 4

Lightly tap a hammer around the entire window frame. Do not hammer directly on the glass and use a protective block to prevent damage to the frame.

  5. Step 5

Reduce the humidity and cool the room as much as possible to shrink the wood. Place a dehumidifier in the room and turn on the air conditioner. Otherwise, wait until the weather is cooler and dry.

  6. Step 6

Use a crow bar to pry open the window if it is still stuck. Place the edge into the bottom ledge of the window and force it open. This may permanently damage the window frame or the track.

Tips & Warnings
  • Call a window installer if you are concerned about damaging the window. They will be able to identify the cause of the sticking.
