How to Replace the Wax on a Toilet
Replacing the wax ring on a toilet is a dirty job but one that can save you some money in plumbing repairs. The ring sits on the underside of the toilet and serves as a barrier to keep sewer gases from seeping out from under your toilet and into your home. Eventually, these wax rings disintegrate over time, allowing water to seep out and damage your bathroom floor. Things You'll Need
- New wax ring
- Disposable gloves
- Assistant
- Wrench
- Caulk
- Putty knife
- Cleaner
- Rags

Turn off the water supply for the tank. This is located on the water input pipe leading from the wall.

Flush the toilet to get rid of the water inside the tank and bowl.

Detach the water supply hose from the tank.

Unscrew the bolts that hold the tank to the bowl. Gently lift the tank off, and set it aside.

Unscrew the bolts that hold the bowl to the floor. Gently rock the tank back and forth to release the tank from any caulk or sealant holding it to the bathroom floor. Have an assistant help you lift the toilet up and out of the way.

Turn the toilet over to reveal the outlet and the old wax ring. Clean off any remnants of the old wax ring with some rags. A putty knife is also useful for scraping away any stubborn bits of wax. Try to make it as clean as possible to give the new ring a good fit.

Gently press the new wax ring on the bowl outlet.

Turn the bowl over, being careful not to let the ring come into contact with anything. Have an assistant help you lower the toilet over the closet flange in the floor, aligning it with the new wax ring.

Gently press the toilet into the ground. You will feel the wax ring compress. This will ensure a good, airtight seal.

Finish installing the toilet by reversing the instructions for removal.

Tips & Warnings
Wax rings come in different sizes and depths. Make sure you get the right size for your toilet. Some people like to put a bead of caulk on the bottom of the toilet as well before turning it over.
Wear a pair of disposable gloves when cleaning off the old wax ring to prevent coming into contact with harmful germs and bacteria.
