How to Use a Corning Ware Coffee Percolator

A vintage coffee percolator like the Corning Ware percolator is a treasure to find. It makes coffee the old-fashioned way by boiling the hot water to the point of percolating through a basket of coffee over and over again, making a very bold and full cup of coffee. The Corning Ware percolator is easy and simple to use. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Take the coffee pot apart. Remove the lid and take out the coffee basket, the coffee basket top and the percolator stem. The coffee basket is a cylinder-like basket with tiny holes in the bottom. The coffee basket lid is a flat piece of stainless steal metal with a lot of tiny holes. The percolator stem is the long stem in the middle of the coffee pot that the coffee basket rests on.

    • 2

Place the percolator stem in the empty coffee pot. Fill the coffee pot with cold, filtered water to the fill line located at the top of the stem. Place the coffee basket on the stem. Be sure the water line is below the bottom of the basket and no water comes into the basket. Add the desired amount of coffee grounds to the basket. Place the basket lid on top of the basket. Secure the lid on top of the coffee pot. Plug in the coffee pot.

    • 3

Pour the coffee and enjoy after it is done percolating. Keep the coffee pot plugged in, as it will keep the coffee hot. Unplug the pot before washing. Take the pot apart with caution because the parts will be hot. Remove any excess coffee by pouring it down the drain. Remove the coffee basket, basket lid and stem. Remove the electric cord from the pot before cleaning. Clean all the parts and leave them to dry. Repeat the process to enjoy your next cup of coffee.

What most people don't realize is that certain Corning Ware coffee pots with the "white and blue cornflower design" were recalled many years ago. This was due to the steel band and handle cracking and separating from the pot. It was very dangerous because this pot made very hot coffee. It is a beautiful vintage pot and I love mine ... but please use extreme caution if you choose to use it. A better use would be to hold tall kitchen utensils like wooden spoons etc. If your pot is the electric model, please note that the cord is a non-standard size. When the electric cord stops working, there is no available replacement except on Ebay.
