Since so many people are turning to an online dating service to meet new people, it is becoming harder and harder to be successful and attract the right kind of person. There are so many different types of online dating websites from ones that are for all the general public to ones that are specific such as Christian online dating websites. Although there are different types of dating sites, here are some guidelines on how to be successful with any type of online dating service.

  1. Step 1

    Before you even sign up for the online dating service, make a list of qualities that you want to find in a date. There may be some qualities that you are negotiable on while there are going to be others that are must-haves.

  2. Step 2

    Search through the many different online dating websites to find one that you want to start with. Read reviews of the dating sites to find help you make your decision. You may want to try free websites first or register for a free trial if available to see if you like the site and it online dating is even for you.

  3. Step 3

    Gather a few flattering and current photographs of yourself for your online dating profile. If you don't have any current pictures, then have someone take a few for you. Don't use pictures that were taken in your mirror on your dating profile. Instead enlist a friend or family member to take a few photographs of you dressed nicely to place on your profile.

  4. Step 4

    Choose a user name that is easy to remember but don't use your own name. Also, be sure that if you use a user name that is suggesting any lewd acts or adjectives about you that you are willing to accept the negative attention you may get back on the dating website.

  5. Step 5

    Surf through other people's personals and profiles to get a sense of what people write on their online dating profile. You don’t want to copy anyone's profile from the online dating service but this can help you get an idea of what you want to write about yourself.

    When writing your online dating profile be sure that you write in a clear and descriptive way that is also amusing and interesting. Describe who you are, what makes you unique, what your interest are and what exactly you are looking for. This will save you a lot of time having to deal with people who don't fit your taste or what you are looking for in a date. Keep the tone friendly and upbeat and don't lie about yourself or manipulate physical characteristics. Be sure to check your profile for spelling and grammar before you submit it.

  7. Step 7

    Only answer emails and messages from people that you are actually interested in getting to know better. Guard your time and your privacy carefully.

  8. Step 8

    Take it slow and look through the profiles of people who match your interests. Just because they do match your interest doesn’t meant that you have to message them. Be selective at first instead of rushing into things with anybody on the website.

  9. Step 9

    Do keep an open mind about the whole online dating service process and people.

  • If you do decide to meet someone from an online dating service, always meet in a public place for the first several dates. Don't share any private information until you get to know them better.
