How to Build a deck the right way

This is the proper way to build a deck attached to your home

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • basic hand tools
  • circular saw
  • drill
  • jig saw
  • level
  • string line
  • materials
  1. Step 1

    remove siding from home where deck is going to go.
    put deck flashing behind siding where ledger board is going
    install ledger board with lag skrews or bolts making sure you hit solid dimension lumber.

  2. Step 2

    Install end joists and outside rim board. Temporararily hold outside up level. Square up by measuring diagonally both ways. Make sure these numbers are the same and attach temporary bracing.

  3. Step 3

    String outside of deck. Layout inside and outside on 16" centers. Measure remaining joists keeping rim on straight line. Install joists with correct hangers and fasteners.

  4. Step 4

    Dig post pads in corners and at least every 8 feet. Check building codes for depths in your area. Put in sonnet tubes and fill with concrete.

  5. Step 5

    Level deck and support with temporary posts.
    Put beam under outside rim supported by permanant posts on post pads.

  6. Step 6

    Now start installing decking from outside rim. Leave a carpenters pencil with between rows. Apply decking from outside to house cutting the last row against houste to fit.

  7. Step 7

    If you are installing a rail cut in the 4x4 posts now. In corners and centered along the way. At least every 8 feet. Apply railing of your choice. Make sure railing is to code if need be.
