1
Before writing, picture yourself already working for the company.
-
2
Make sure this company is the one for you. If you cannot muster the energy to right a cover letter for a specific company, take this as a sign the company is not for you.
-
-
3
Avoid stupid facts about the company. Human Relations already knows there are X number of stores in the United States. Show a deeper understanding.
-
4
Take time writing the letter. Applicants can tend to rush cover letters to simply finish an application. Instead, take a night to sleep on what you have written. The next day, you should find at least one way to improve your cover letter. Continue this process until you are satisfied.

Quantify reasons you want to work for the company and establish credentials for these reasons. Example: The diverse tasks associated with Sherwin Williams are attractive characteristics. Rather than working on a specific function until exhaustion, the Sherwin William's business model expands on all the capabilities of their employees. As an employee, I would love the opportunity to excel in marketing, management, sales, finance, and general business. I do think the high retention rate among employees proves that Sherwin Williams has found the equilibrium for challenging and rewarding their people.

If you know someone working for the company or in a similar industry, have him/her read your letter. If you cannot find someone in a related field, having someone review your letter is still a great option.
-
7
Thank the company. A thank you will always look nice at the end of a cover letter. A thank you at the beginning may be okay as well, decide what you think looks the best. Good luck!
