How to Avoid Social Media Mistakes

The rules of social media are changing at the speed of new technology. They can be very useful when properly used, but you can also quickly alienate the very business contacts you're looking to cultivate.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Share personal information - but not too much. Include a photo of yourself and a short bio, even if it's just a couple of lines. This helps establish your presence and your 'brand' on the web. This means sharing your job or hobbies, but you can leave out the messy divorce that's causing you to have bad credit.

  2. Step 2

Market yourself on your own pages, not other peoples. Posting information, about your job search for example, on someone else's Facebook wall comes across as spammy and unprofessional. The very people you're trying to attract will see through this ploy.

  3. Step 3

Avoid playing silly games on social media sites like Facebook. That means no 'poking' or inviting someone to take part in online games. For business people looking to use social media for business purposes these tactics are seen as annoying.

  4. Step 4

Keep networking offline. Don't let important relationships remain only virtual if you can help it. Connect with your contacts in a personal way, even if that means personal emails or phone calls. There's no point in accumulating all those connections if you don't actually connect.
